As an outsider, I side 100% with the Blue Jackets! Coming into the season, Johanson delivered exactly 33 pts in 107 games and after one very promising season he wants to be paid among the upper echelon players in the league? A 2-year bridge deal at $3.5-4M to prove that he can deliver consistently is quite reasonable. Claude Giroux has made no more than $3.5M so far (going up to $8.25M this season). Giroux had to prove that he brings the goods year in and year out. The Flyers have been guilty have throwing money around like idiots in the past but they have handled Giroux correctly.

Johanson (and/or his agent) is out of his mind! JD is 100% correct and justified in his comments. CBJs need to stand firm. Johanson's teammates also need to let him know that he's looking like a selfish a$$ at this moment.

I don't side with JD or management . They have the second lowest payroll in the NHL. He is their best player ,start paying him as a best player. owners can't sit on their wallets year after year and keep handing fans excuses.

Bob might have something to say about who the best player is.

If you were starting a team and you could grab one as the cornerstone of your franchise , who are you taking? My choice would be RJ

I like that teams are taking a stance. Be nice to see guys make money after 2nd contract, but when you have a top 5 pick coming off a 30-30 season and has been made out to be the franchise player what do you expect?

Agreed. Assuming last season is the real RJ, he'll get his payday. Take the bridge contract and watch how much higher salaries get by the time that's done.

True about the payroll but that's one more reason they can't afford to screw this up. They are a small market team. $6.5M is way too much for 1 very good year. It's really no more complicated than that. Let's see how he performs when teams realize they actually need to check him now - which was not the case 1 year ago. If he delivers, he will get paid.

So JD wants to pay a 6'3 first line centre that will score 30 goals this year 4 mil.

If I am RJ I sit patiently in the comforts of his new Port Coquitlam home and wait until CBJ start missing his 30 goals and losing games because they are missing that big centre.

When they do come calling ask for a signing bonus to pro rate his salary up to 6 mil for time missed.

If CBJ can't play with the big boys and can't handle a big contract then trade him , 20 other teams would love his services and be willing to pay.

Pretty much, how many games can they afford to lose before they have no choice but to sign him.

I am however shocked that the offer sheet hasn't become an issue yet. Or is he not eligible for one?

To make an OS that CBJ would not match would cost 4 first rounders . he is not worth that .

Nah. No one is going to give him 8.4mil. The 6.5 that they won't currently pay is only a 1st, 2nd a 3rd.

A team like WPG comes in at 7mil and it's 2 1sts a 2nd a 3rd

This is ridiculous; the big boys don't pay out bridge contracts at 6 million a year.

Adaboy JD stick it to that scum agent of his , who the hell does he think his client is by comparing him to Kane, Toews or Stammer.

then those 20 teams gm's have no clue how to negotiate. JD is spot on saying he and Kekka could get fired if they hand out that kind of contract to RJ .

Which big boy has had a bridge contract the past couple years?

You also have to factor that benefit of playing on a winning club. Lots of guys take pay cuts.

And just looking at CHI, they did pay Toews and Kane 6.3mil back in 10-11 on 5 year deals.

Kekka should get fired sooner for offering an injury prone Horton the contract he did.

Because Kane and Toews proved they were exceptional during their rookie contract years, RJ had one good season.

Bah at a 5,3 cap hit with a rising cap it,s not bad, besides when he plays he's pretty effective, as shown last year.

What is ridiculous is CB paid 810 k last year for a guy to score 30 goals and make the owner a few mil extra in the playoffs, and now they wat to pay him 3.5 mil for his efforts.

They already had their bargain year.

They owner has 14 mil in space with one player left to sign , the franchise player. Time to put up or shut up. RJ has already given them their discount year.

There's no way this kid starts the season as a Blue Jacket. This is more or less his way of saying "I dont want to play here".

JD has always been a cheap bastard , that is why he is a career GM/ Pres to the teams of smaller markets.
